Meet Beat'achon

Moshe Cohn, has been performing as a singer since the age of three, when he sang the blessings over the Chanukah candles for his parents and family. Fortunately for Beat'achon, his voice has not changed since that time. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Moshe graduated from the Yeshiva of Flatbush High School, where he sang in the school's choir and senior a cappella group, and served as musical director of his senior class play. He learned to play the piano at age seven and now uses his talents to compose Jewish music and to moonlight as a cocktail keyboardist. Moshe has a BFA in Creative Writing from Brooklyn College, where he is now a post-graduate student in the Conservatory of Music.

Maksim (Max) Frenkel was born in Minsk, Belarus, where he studied drums at a special School for Music. At the age of five he began singing with the Music School Jazz Orchestra, and subsequently sang in Jewish music concerts throughout Russia and Europe. Max discovered Beat'achon by accident (or was it Divine providence?) when he was given a tape by someone visiting Minsk. He is currently a student at the Sy Syms School of Business at Yeshiva University.

Jordan B. Gorfinkel (Executive Director) is a founding member of Beat'achon. He is a comic book writer and also the creator of the nationally syndicated weekly Jewish comic strip, "Everything's Relative." He also serves as a cantor at Congregation Ohab Zedek in Manhattan, where he lives with wife Amy (Burzinski, of Cleveland) and daughters Ashira and Eliana, whom he credits as his true inspirations.

Alex Katz was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He has previously sung with the Ramaz Chorus and Chamber Chorus, and with Hazamir National Jewish High School Choir. He is a recent graduate of Yeshiva University and the soon-to-be husband of Rachel Katz (no relation - yet!).

Elie Landau manages Broadway shows. A resident of Manhattan, he is also the co-founder and manager of a shomer-Shabbat theatre company.

David Matkowsky is a founding member of Beat'achon. He was born in Albany, NY, and when he was ten years old his family moved to Skokie, Illinois. Within a year he tracked them down. Currently Dave is pursuing a Ph.D. in Politics at New York University, and working for the Shalem year program in Israel for high school graduates. Dave and has served as the group's director of Public Relations.

Alex Mauskop is a student in the BA/MD program at Brooklyn College. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, NY, Alex sang in the Yeshivah Of Flatbush High School Choir and Chamber Choir and now serves as the school's hockey coach. He also works as a research assistant at Beth Israel Medical Center.

David Max was born and raised in Brookline, MA. He is a graduate of Caltech and NYU and is a Software Engineer. He, his wife Tina, and their dog Rocky live in Riverdale, NY.

Shlomo Ressler was born in Israel, raised in LA, and now lives in Brooklyn, NY. He's an Information Architect by day, and sends out a weekly Dvar Torah Email by night.

David Ross is a professional musician from Ardsley, NY.  David recently graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Arts in music, and will begin his masters degree program in music education at Columbia University in January, 2002 (G-d willing).  David plays several instruments, including the guitar and piano, and was a self-taught musician until college. When he's not singing with Beat'achon, David is a public school music teacher by day and a composer and choral conductor by night.

Avy Schreiber is a founding member of Beat'achon. A native of Southfield, MI, Avy is now pursuing a full-time music career in Detroit. He is married to Lynne Cohn of Detroit.
